Old City

Old City is a historic neighborhood in Center City, Philadelphia, along the Delaware River waterfront. Known as the birthplace of American democracy, it is home to Independence National Historical Park, which includes Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell, the First and Second Banks of the United States, and Carpenters’ Hall. Historic streets like Elfreth’s Alley date back to 1703, adding to the area’s colonial charm.

Boundaries & History

Old City is bordered by Northern Liberties (north), Penn’s Landing (east), Society Hill (south), and Chinatown/Market East (west). It played a pivotal role in early U.S. history, serving as the nation’s financial center until the 1830s and housing both the Pennsylvania and U.S. governments (1776–1800). Over time, it transitioned from a business hub to a warehouse district, before being revitalized into a cultural and nightlife destination.
